Method

Grids are laid out as an even division of the area, with an equal corridor between neighbours.

  1. Grid length is the area length minus the corridors along the length, divided by the number of grids along the length.
  2. Grid width is the same calculation across the width.
  3. With a corridor, each grid is marked as its own closed rectangle, so marked length is the number of grids multiplied by each grid's perimeter.
  4. With no corridor the grids share their edges, so marked length is the lattice: one more line than the number of grids in each direction, each running the full length of the area in that direction.
  5. Marker count is each grid's perimeter divided by your spacing, rounded up, with a minimum of four per grid for the corners.
  6. A paint estimate, if requested, uses the same arithmetic as the pitch marking calculator.

Assumptions

  • Grids are rectangles of equal size, arranged on a regular lattice.
  • The corridor between grids is the same everywhere, including at the edges between grids but not around the outside of the whole area.
  • The marker count is an approximation for planning, not a placement diagram.
  • Overlapping or offset grid patterns are not modelled.
