How much line marking paint does a football pitch need?
There is no universal answer in litres, because coverage varies between products and line width varies between clubs. There is a reliable method, and it takes about two minutes once you have the numbers.
The method
- Add up the total length of line you are going to mark, in metres.
- Multiply by the line width in metres to get the painted area in square metres.
- Multiply by the number of coats.
- Divide by the coverage of your product, in square metres per litre per coat.
- Add a wastage allowance for priming the machine, spillage and overmarking.
- Divide by your pack size and round up to whole packs.
The coverage figure has to come from the product you are actually using. It is printed on the container and in the technical data sheet, and it varies widely between concentrates, ready-mixed paints and aerosols. A figure borrowed from a different product is the most common reason an estimate comes out wrong.
Line length of a full-size pitch
The table below is the marked line length of a 100 by 64 m 11-a-side pitch, broken down by line group. Lines are counted once: the penalty and goal areas are three-sided because the goal line already forms their fourth side.

Excluded from the total:
- Centre mark and penalty marks are painted as spots, not runs of line, and are excluded from the line length.
- Optional corner-flag reference marks 9.15 m from each corner arc are excluded.
- Technical areas, spectator lines and any competition-specific extra markings are excluded.
Smaller pitches need proportionally less line, but not much less than people expect, because the penalty areas, centre circle and corner arcs do not shrink at the same rate as the perimeter.

The coverage figure above is an example only. Use the figure printed on the product you are buying.
Change the coverage figure and the answer changes completely, which is the whole point. Run your own numbers in the calculator rather than carrying this example around.
Allowances worth adding
- Priming and purging the machine at the start and end of the job.
- The straight you have to go over twice because the wind caught it.
- Spillage while filling, which on a windy morning is not trivial.
- A first mark on unmarked grass, which absorbs noticeably more than an overmark on an existing line.
A 10 per cent allowance covers routine overmarking on an established pitch. Marking out fresh lines on grass that has never been marked usually wants more.
