It has been 10 years since that finale in Paris, which Arsenal lost 2-1 against Barcelona. Since than, Barcelona has been collecting trophies for fun, while Arsenal barely won two FA Cups. Comparing results, Barcelona and Arsenal were like night and day in the past decade.
Normally, it got people comparing the two clubs, and pointing out how bad Arsenal is against Barcelona. I don’t think that this comparisons are fair to Arsenal, and this is because…
Barcelona’s slogan says it all! “Mes que un club”, or in English “More than a club”, tells you a lot about Barcelona. The fact is that Barcelona is not just a football club. Firstly it has other sports under it, like basketball club, handball club,..etc. On the other hand, Arsenal is focused only on football.

Barcelona is also the most important part of its city, an larger community. The club is like an expensive commercial for city of Barcelona and Catalonia. It has a very important political importance for Spain, and even has elections.
Arsenal is one of many clubs in London, it has a long legacy and has won the most trophies in London. It doesn’t have any political importance for England, and is not really that important for London.
Arsenal is classical English club while Barcelona is more of a political entity, which also happens to play football.
Barcelona is in golden age, and Arsenal isn’t!
Barcelona curent part of history is the most successful ever. Barca is currently winning every trophy and is (basically) playing the best football in their history. I mean, they have won four Champions League trophies in the last ten years or so, while only one Champions League trophy in the previous 100 years.
Trophies won by both clubs the since the 2006 UEFA Champions League final:
Arsenal – 🏆🏆🏆🏆
FC Barcelona – 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆#FCBvAFC

Arsenal is in some kind of transition. They build a new stadium, which costs prevented the club to be competitive on the field in Europe and in England. This part of Arsenal history is probably going to be remembered mainly by the new stadium!
That’s why comparing Barcelona’s results and Arsenal’s results isn’t fair. Its like comparing Arsenal’s results and (let’s say) Portsmouth’s results. There’s too much difference in the overall form of both teams!
Barcelona doesn’t work like a company, Arsenal does!
Most of the fans are criticizing Arsenal focus on profits. They believe that Arsenal (and Wenger) should splash the cash to became more competitive on the field. They look at Manchester City and Chelsea, and they reckon that’s normal.
Well its not normal, not by a long shot!
Arsenal is a company, and they are acting accordingly. The point of a company is to make profit, and Arsenal is doing just that. This (obviously) doesn’t look good in the league where other clubs are spending big, but its the right way to run a club. At least the most stable way!

Barcelone is, in a way, quite similar to those big spending clubs with cash daddies. The difference here is that the city of Barcelona and Catalonia act as the money backers of the club. Barca also profits form big chunk of TV money, which is very unequally dispersed among the Spanish clubs.
This all makes Barcelona very rich, with practically unlimited amount of money, while Arsenal is your regular kind of company.
Barcelona bought their way to success, Arsenal hasn’t!
Barcelona has one of the best youth set ups in the world (if not the best). However, Barcelona still bought their way to success.
The players like Lionel Messi, Xavi Hernandez, and Andres Iniesta are La Masia (Barcelona youth academy) biggest products and were virtually free. Players like Ronaldinho, Neymar, Luis Suarez,..etc. were anything but free!

Although Barcelona’s academy players were very important for the club’s success, that success wouldn’t be achieved if Barcelona wouldn’t buy all those star players!
This is also the reason why Arsenal couldn’t win anything, because they were lacking those big money signings. No wonder that Arsenal won first trophy in almost 10 years after buying Mesut Ozil for some crazy money!
Arsenal and Barcelona are not comparable because, Barcelona is not a club, Arsenal acts like a company, Barcelona spent a lot more than Arsenal, and Barcelona is having the most successful era in their history!
This might change in the future, given that Arsenal is going to get a massive financial boost (new TV deal), and given that Messi is getting older. It just might be, that the clubs are in the exactly opposite positions in a couple of years, but until then, Barcelona is simply in another league.
