Fenerbahce has finally signed Robin Van Persie from Manchester United for mere £5 million, which is not a lot for a player of Van Persie quality. Fenerebahce didn’t have to pay that much money for signing Van Persie, but they will have to pay him €1 million every month, which means that he is going to cost Fenerbahce a lot of money in the long run.
Van Persie has been playing practically his whole career in Premier League. He came to Arsenal when he was just 20 years old. His start at Arsenal was slow in terms of scoring goals. He scored just 10 goals in his first 2 seasons in the Premier League, where he managed to play quite a lot.
His breakthrough season was in 2006/2007 where he reached double figures in goals tally in Premeir League (11 goals). Most fans expected him to flourish in the next season, but injury prevented that. Van Persie played only 15 games in that season, but scored impressive 7 goals.
Season 2008/2009 was again more impressive, and showed that he could be the next Thierry Henry. He scored 20 goals overall, which was his biggest tally of goals so far. Van Persie was also becoming more influential because he also made 10 assists in that season.
Everyone had high expectations after that season, but again it fall apart with another injury. In season 2009/2010 he made only 16 appearances in Premier League, but scored 9 goals which was again impressive, given the lack of playing time.
Van Persie finally recovered midway through the next season, and he was starting to show performances that were similar to Thierry Henry. Van Persie scored 18 goals in that season, and was becoming one of the best strikers in Premier League.
Season 2011/2012 was arguably the worst for Arsene Wenger, and the best for Robin Van Persie. Leaving of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri left a big hole at Arsenal. That hole was so big that Manchester United managed to put 8 goals in Arsenal net. Thankfully Van Persie had the form of his life and scored 30 goals which helped Arsenal to qualify for Champions League. With that feat, Van Persie managed to get the status of a king at Arsenal, but no one expected what would happen next.
Robin Van Persie left Arsenal for Manchester United (of all clubs), and became an instant hate figure amongst the Arsenal faithful. People were condemning both Wenger and Chief Executive Ivan Gazidis for selling one of the best strikers to a rival like United. Things escalated even more when Van Persie started scoring for Manchester United. Hate towards him only increased, when he scored in his first game against Arsenal, to secure the win for Manchester United. Van Persie’s 26 goals that season brought United the 20th Premier League title.
It looked like Van Persie made a great decision by ditching Arsenal for Manchester United, because he won himself his first Premier League title. Alex Ferguson had other ideas, because he retired at the end of that season. This plunged United into a mini crisis, which meant that Van Persie has won himself the only Premier League trophy. His next two seasons at United were marked with injuries and bad form. United obviously didn’t needed him anymore this season, so Van Persie decided to go to Turkey.
I think that a lot of Arsenal fans were happy that it didn’t work out for Van Persie at United, some are even suggesting that it was a smart idea selling him to United, due to Van Persie problems with injuries. I believe that Robin Van Persie wasn’t a one season wonder, but a two season wonder. Van Persie first helped Arsenal to a fourth place, and than he helped United to win their 20th title.
Robin had 2 fantastic seasons in Premier League, but his legacy will always be tarnished. He would probably be a legend at Arsenal, if he would stay. He even might have won a Premier League trophy with Arsenal, but because he left, he is always going to be remembered by Arsenal and United fans, as a player who had one good season at the club.
