Should stars be treated differently than other football players?

Star players

Every football club has a star player. With that I mean that he scores the most goals, plays the best, dribbles the best, etc. We like to think that without that star player, the club wouldn’t even exist. That is why we believe that they should get everything just to be happy. Not long ago, Lionel Messi sounded his dissatisfaction because he didn’t play where he wanted to. This brings the question, should stars be treated differently than the other football players?

Alexis Sanchez has been quite phenomenal for Arsenal this season, and is becoming Arsenal star player. Something he was not at Barcelona. Lionel Messi is the star at Barcelona, and there was simply no room for Alexis Sanchez.

That usually happens, when you put a lot of star players in one squad. I remember when Real Madrid bought Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka. People assumed that they will be unstoppable force together. Well Cristiano Ronaldo proved to be quite a force, but Kaka never really showed what he could do, and was just a shadow of himself from AC Milan.

Every star player considers himself irreplaceable because he plays that good. But the thing, that makes that star player so good, is not his talents and powers, but his team mates around him. If you would put Cristiano Ronaldo into Stoke team, he probably wouldn’t be scoring 50 goals a season, right.

Alex Ferguson always said that no player should be bigger than the coach or the club. Whenever that happened at Manchester United, the player went. Out went David Beckham, Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Roy Keane, Cristiano Ronaldo, etc. Alex Ferguson managed to win 49 trophies with Manchester United and became one of the best, if not the best manager of a football club in the world. He certainly knew what he was talking about.

Every player is expandable, and that is a fact. Whenever a great player leaves, there is always someone at the club who can replace him. The problem is that it can take some time. Nevertheless if that player is not sold, when he thinks he is too important, the whole team can suffer because of it.

Football is a team sport and no individual is greater than the team. So I believe that stars shouldn’t be treated differently than other players? Even if players like Lionel Messi, or Cristiano Ronaldo decide that they are too big for their clubs, they should be moved. When star player leaves, clubs suffer in the short term, but eventually prosper in the long one.
